Common faults

What comes through the door most weeks

Almost every laptop and PC fault falls into one of these. If yours isn’t listed, bring it in anyway — the diagnostic is free either way.

Cracked or black screen

Dropped it, sat on it, or the screen has gone dark while everything else still works. Replacement panels for most makes are with us in a day or two.

from £89

Won’t turn on at all

No lights, no fan, nothing. Usually the charger, the power jack or the battery rather than the machine itself — worth checking before you write it off.

free diagnostic

Painfully slow

Takes five minutes to boot and stalls on everything. Nine times out of ten an SSD and a proper clean-up makes an old laptop feel new again.

from £45

Spilled a drink on it

Tea, coffee, wine — act fast and turn it off. The sooner it reaches us the better the odds, because corrosion is what actually kills the board.

Broken hinge or casing

The lid has gone floppy or the screen bezel is separating. Left alone this tears the screen cable, so it is worth catching early.

from £65

Hard drive failure

Clicking, grinding, or a blue screen on startup. We can usually recover your files even when the drive is beyond saving.

from £79

Also common: keyboards with dead keys, batteries that no longer charge, noisy or overheating fans, Windows that won’t boot, forgotten passwords, laptops stuck in a repair loop after an update, and machines running out of storage.

Questions we get asked

Computer repair questions, answered

How long will my laptop take?

Most jobs are done the same day or the next working day. Anything needing a part we don’t stock — a screen for an unusual model, say — is normally two to three days once the part lands.

We’ll tell you the timescale when we quote, not after.

Will I lose my files?

No. We copy your data off before doing anything that touches the drive, and we’ll always ask first if a repair risks it.

If the drive itself has failed, that becomes a data recovery job — and we’ll tell you honestly what the chances are before you commit to anything.

What if you can’t fix it?

Then you don’t pay. No diagnostic charge, no “we had a look” fee, nothing. You collect your machine and we’ve both lost nothing but a bit of time.

Do you work on Macs as well as Windows?

Yes. MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis for screens, batteries, storage upgrades, macOS reinstalls and liquid damage.

A handful of the very newest models have parts locked to Apple — if yours is one of them we’ll say so straight away rather than take your money and find out later.

Is it worth repairing an old laptop?

Often, yes — and we’ll tell you honestly when it isn’t. A machine that’s five or six years old and merely slow is usually transformed by an SSD and more memory for well under a hundred pounds.

But if the board has gone on a laptop worth £150, we’ll say so. That’s the whole reason this shop exists: we’d rather fix what you’ve got than sell you something you don’t need.

Do I need an appointment?

No, just walk in. We’re at 27 Queen Street in Horbury with parking right outside.

Booking online first does save you a wait, and means we can check we’ve got the part before you make the trip.

Do you collect, or come out to me?

For home users it’s usually quicker to drop in. For local businesses we can collect and deliver, and come out on site where the problem is the network rather than one machine — just ring and ask.
