Common faults

When people usually ring us

If your files matter, stop using the device now. Every extra minute powered on can make recovery harder — the single best thing you can do is switch it off and bring it in.

Drive clicking or grinding

A mechanical noise means the drive is physically failing. Turn it off immediately — every attempt to boot it makes things worse.

Computer won’t start

Very often the files are perfectly intact and only the machine has failed. We can usually pull everything off and move it to your new one.

from £79

Deleted the wrong thing

Emptied the bin, wiped the wrong folder, or reformatted a card by mistake. Stop using the device and there’s a good chance it’s still there.

from £79

Phone won’t turn on

Years of photos on a handset that’s gone dead. Depending on the fault we can often reach the storage even when the phone itself is finished.

Memory or SD card failure

Camera cards and phone SD cards fail more often than people expect, usually at the worst moment. Often recoverable.

from £59

Ransomware or corruption

Files encrypted or scrambled. What’s recoverable varies enormously, so we’ll assess honestly before you spend anything.

Also common: old computers nobody can get into any more, drives from machines that were thrown out, laptops damaged by liquid, and business systems where the backup turned out not to have been running.

Questions we get asked

Data recovery questions, answered

What should I do right now?

Turn the device off and leave it off. Don’t keep trying to boot it, don’t run recovery software you found online, and don’t let anyone “have a quick go”.

Every one of those things can turn a recoverable situation into an unrecoverable one. Switch it off and bring it in.

What are my chances?

Honestly, it depends entirely on what’s failed — and anyone who quotes you a percentage before looking is guessing.

Deleted files and dead computers with healthy drives are usually straightforward. Mechanically failed drives are far less certain. We’ll assess yours and tell you plainly what we think before you commit to anything.

What does it cost if you get nothing back?

Nothing. If we can’t recover your files there’s no charge — that’s the whole point of no recovery, no fee.

Is my data kept private?

Yes. We only look at what we need to in order to check the recovery has worked, we don’t copy anything elsewhere, and once you’ve confirmed you’ve got everything we securely wipe our working copy.

How long does it take?

A straightforward recovery from a healthy drive is usually a day. A failing drive can take several days, because rushing it risks losing the very data we’re trying to save.

We’ll give you a realistic timescale after the assessment.

Can you get photos off a broken phone?

Often, yes — it depends on whether the fault is the screen, the battery, the board, or the storage itself. A phone with a smashed screen but working insides is usually straightforward.

How do I stop this happening again?

Two copies in two places, one of them off-site or in the cloud, and check occasionally that it’s actually running. Most of the heartbreaking cases we see are people who thought their backup was working and it hadn’t run for two years.

We’re happy to set that up for you while you’re here.
