Common faults

What people bring us

If you think you’ve been caught by a scam, the important thing is to act quickly and not be embarrassed about it. These are professionally made and they catch careful people every day.

“Microsoft” rang me

Nobody from Microsoft, BT or your bank will ever ring about a virus. If you let someone connect to your computer, bring it in — we’ll find what they installed and secure your accounts.

from £45

Alarming pop-ups

A red warning screen with a phone number to ring. It’s fake, the number goes to a scam call centre, and the message itself is usually harmless once removed.

from £30

Browser has been hijacked

Different search engine, new toolbars, adverts on every page. Irritating rather than dangerous, but it usually means something else got in too.

from £30

Files encrypted, ransom demanded

Ransomware. Don’t pay. Bring it in and we’ll assess what’s recoverable and get you back to a clean machine.

free assessment

Everything has slowed to a crawl

Sometimes malware quietly using your machine, sometimes just years of accumulated clutter. The free diagnostic tells us which.

from £45

Emails sent that weren’t from me

Friends replying to messages you never wrote usually means the email account itself has been compromised, not the computer.

from £45

Also common: fake antivirus subscriptions people have been billed for, banking sites that look slightly wrong, computers running hot and noisy for no reason, and machines that were “fixed” by a caller who asked for a gift card.

Questions we get asked

Virus and scam questions, answered

I let someone remote onto my computer. What now?

Disconnect it from the internet and stop using it. Then, from a different device, change the passwords on your email and online banking — email first, because that’s what everything else resets through.

Ring your bank if you gave any card or account details. Then bring the computer to us so we can find what was installed and make sure they can’t get back in.

Is my banking safe?

Assume it isn’t until it’s been checked. Ring your bank — they deal with this daily and would far rather hear from you early.

When we clean the machine we also look for keyloggers and remote access tools, and we’ll help you work out what needs changing.

Do I need to buy antivirus?

For most people, no. Windows has perfectly good protection built in, and it’s already switched on.

We’d rather tell you that than sell you a subscription you don’t need. If you do want something extra we’ll recommend what actually helps.

Should I pay the ransom?

No. There’s no guarantee of getting anything back, and paying marks you as someone who pays.

Bring it in and let us assess what’s recoverable first — sometimes far more survives than the ransom note suggests.

Will I lose anything in the clean-up?

Normally nothing at all. We remove the infection and leave your files, programs and settings alone.

If a machine is too badly compromised to trust, we’ll back everything up before a reinstall and put it all back afterwards — and we’ll explain why before doing it.

How do I avoid it next time?

Two rules cover almost everything. No genuine company will ever ring you unprompted about a virus on your computer. And no genuine company will ever ask to be paid in gift cards.

Beyond that: keep updates on, and be wary of anything that creates urgency.

I feel daft for falling for it.

Don’t. These are professionally produced and designed by people who do this full time. We see teachers, accountants and IT-literate people caught by them.

The only mistake would be leaving it and hoping. Bring it in.
