Common faults
The four faults we see again and again
Consoles fail in very consistent ways, which is good news — it means most of what comes in is a known quantity with a known fix.
No picture on the TV
Almost always a damaged HDMI port rather than a dead console, usually from a knock to the cable. It’s a board-level repair and very often worth doing.
from £59Controller drifts on its own
Characters walking off by themselves. Extremely common on Switch Joy-Cons and worn PlayStation sticks, and a straightforward fix.
from £35Loud fan, then it shuts down
Overheating, usually from years of dust and dried-out thermal paste. A strip, clean and repaste brings noise and temperature right back down.
from £45Won’t read discs
Discs not recognised, or a grinding noise from the drive. Usually the laser or the drive gears rather than the whole console.
from £55Dead or swollen battery
Handhelds that won’t hold charge, or a swollen battery pushing the case apart. Worth dealing with promptly — a swollen battery is a genuine hazard.
from £45Charging port damage
Switch and controller charge ports take a lot of abuse. A worn or bent port can usually be replaced without touching the rest of the board.
from £45Also common: consoles stuck in safe mode, storage upgrades, sticky or unresponsive buttons, broken hinges and casing on handhelds, and consoles that were opened by someone else and not put back together properly.

Questions we get asked
Console repair questions, answered
Is it cheaper than buying a new console?
Nearly always, and usually dramatically so. An HDMI port repair costs a fraction of a replacement console, and you keep every game, save and account already on it.
If we think yours genuinely isn’t worth repairing, we’ll tell you rather than take the job.
Will I lose my games or saves?
No. Repairs are to the hardware and your storage isn’t touched, so games, saves and accounts all stay exactly as they were.
How long does it take?
Controller drift and cleaning jobs are usually a day or two. Board-level work like HDMI ports takes a little longer, typically two to four days.
Can you fix controller drift for good?
We replace the worn stick module rather than just cleaning it, which is what makes the difference between a fix that lasts and one that comes back in a month. It’s guaranteed for 12 months.
My console is really loud. Is that bad?
It’s a warning worth acting on. Loud fans mean it’s fighting to stay cool, and sustained heat is what eventually kills the board.
A clean and repaste is cheap compared with what overheating does if it’s left long enough.
Do you work on retro consoles?
Often, yes — bring it in and we’ll have a look. Older hardware can be easier to work on than modern consoles, though parts are sometimes harder to source. The diagnostic is free either way.
Someone already tried to fix it. Will you still look?
Yes, and you’d be surprised how often we see it. Tell us what was done so we know where to start — you won’t get a lecture.
